Get stand alone installer for windows live messenger and windows live writer

Posted by Saad Ibrahim 9 August, 2008

Ever since Microsoft started giving their windows live labelled software through windows live installer I am having hard time installing these software’s because it is hard to download those installers through Windows Live Installer every time you need to install a windows live software especially if you have slow connection and this makes the installation process really slow, thank god windows live installer saves a copy of the installer on your harddisk once you install the software, I will show you how to get the installers

sshot-3

First open my computer open tools menu and select folder options

sshot-4

in the window that shows up click on “view” tab and scroll down a bit and now uncheck “Hide Protected Operating system files (Recommended)” option

sshot-7

Click “Yes” button in the Dialogue box that appears and click ok

Remember: This will start showing some really important System files in your PC so don’t start deleting them ;) you can uncheck this option later and everything will be back to normal

sshot-8

Now browse to X:\Program Files\Common Files (Where X is the windows installation directory), here you will see a folder named WindowsLiveInstaller, open it, remember this wont show up until you finish the first step

sshot-9

now open the MsiSources folder

sshot-10

here you will see few msi Installers (the number depends on how many programs you installed using windows live installer), but now you must be thinking how to recognise which installer is for which program, don’t worry just go in the properties any installer and click on summary tab and here you can see the details

sshot-11

Now copy the installer you want to a folder in your hard drive

Enjoy! now you don’t need to worry about downloading the installation files again the next time you reinstall windows :)

This trick works for all software’s that are being offered through WLI by Microsoft Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Writer and Windows Live Mail.
