See your Gmail Unread Mail Count on the favicon

Yesterday I found a cool new extension named “Badges On Favicon”, basically what is does is that it shows a image on on the favicon with the use of java scripts called “badgets” which can show any kind of number like the Gmail unread mail count on the favicon, it isn’t limited to Gmail only there are few more badgets available that can show Yahoo Finance Quotes, unread messages from Apple’s Mobile Me Mail, number of unread items from Netvibes, number of new results since the start of the Twitter search, new items iGoogle Reader Gadget and unread mails from Zenbe, you can also create your own badgets if you cant find  anything interesting in the current badgets.

when you install this extension 4 badgets are installed by default that are Gmail Unread count, Google Reader iGoogle Gadget, Yahoo finance and Zenbe mail count, you can install other badgets from the developer’s site, once you install the extension it will start showing the badge on the favicon, this thing works great with Faviconized tabs extension which minimizes the tab to the extent that it only shows the favicon so that it doesn’t uses much space on the tab bar

Gmail with badge Faviconized!

this thing wasn’t working with better Gmail’s “show unread count first” feature but the developer was very kind to quickly make a modified badget for it that works perfectly now so if you are using better Gmail extension specifically its “show unread count first” feature you will have to install the new badget otherwise it wont show the unread count but remember first you need to remove the older Gmail badget

here’s the procedure of removing the older badget and installing the new one:

goto Mozilla addons manager (tools–>addons) and select badget on favicon and click on options button, you will get a window like this

select “Gmail mail count” from the list at the left and click uninstall button and click ok

sshot-4

now click on install new badget button and browse to the folder where you saved the Gmail unread count 2.js file, select it and you are done

now restart Firefox and it will start showing your unread count on the favicon

although this extension is new and still in experimental mode on official Mozilla addons site but it works fine, you can install it from the developers own site

Hi. Any idea how to get hold of the “Badges On Favicon” developer? I really like his add-on but found it does not work when the hugely popular Tab Mix Plus add-on is enabled. Thanks.
